Our pre-sealing service was set up in November 2017 and has been going from strength to strength ever since.
Our customers are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits that having your natural stone pre-sealed with high quality Dry-Treat™ sealant can have in protecting their investment and saving money in the long run.
The rapid rise of porcelain paving has threatened the marketplace for higher end natural stone. However, at Kebur we still love natural stone and have extended our range this season. Porcelain isn’t to everyone’s taste and is perhaps not suited to all settings. But by pre-sealing your natural stone, customers can have a product with outstanding natural beauty and character along with reduced maintenance.
Antony Vincent is the head technician at our dedicated pre-seal facility and describes the pre-sealing process. “In short, the crates of stone are unwrapped. The slabs are checked for damage and marks, cleaned up if necessary and left in racks to dry”.
He continues, “Once dried, the slabs are moved and prepped on the sealing table. A mist coat, followed by two or three heavier coats are then applied at certain periods depending on the type of stone. The slabs are moved back into the drying racks to cure for 24 hours before being packed ready for dispatch”.
Antony goes on to describe the main challenges in his role being, managing the working space he has and the length of time it can take some of the slabs to dry before he can seal them, a problem exacerbated by cold and damp weather.
The advantages from having your stone pre-sealed by Kebur start at the point of installation. With the stone arriving pre-sealed you don’t have to wait on dry weather until you can seal it. And whilst we would always encourage working as clean as possible, having the stone pre-sealed also means that any mortar spillages can be cleaned off quite easily, which isn’t the case if the stone isn’t sealed especially for stones such as limestone where acid cleaners would damage the stone. Our natural stone suppliers have strict quality control measures, but by pre-sealing your stone it gives us another chance to check for any issues with the paving as we unpack and repack all the paving for you.
The premium impregnating and breathable Dry-Treat™ sealers that we use give long lasting protection that repel water, oil and grease.
Being breathable means that water vapor permeates freely, to avoid moisture build-up inside the material. This helps protect your paving from the unsightly effects of efflorescence.
Whilst having your stone pre-sealed makes natural stone paving much easier to clean there are more specific reasons to seal certain stones with the water repellent Dry-Treat™ sealant.
Natural Granite, whilst very hard-wearing is porous. Without pre-sealing your Natural Granite there is a chance of picture framing occurring whereby a dark stain appears around the edges of the paving slabs. This happens when the water in the grout which contains cement and minerals permeates into the edge of the pavers and dries, staining the slab.
Natural Limestones are made up of lots of different grains and minerals. Water that gets in between the grains and freezes and thaws can put stress on the strength of the stone causing damage as a result. With Dry-Treat™ sealant the water is not allowed into the stone and the stone is also strengthened. Fading of limestone is also reduced with a sealant as the acid in rain is repelled.
Light coloured sandstones that are easily marked and have higher levels of porosity can quickly turn green with algae as moisture sits within the stone. By stopping the water coming in this is heavily reduced.
We also offer the option of sealing your paving with Dry Treat Intensifia™ which provides a combination of enhancer and sealer to bring out the natural character of the stone.
